MRI & Imaging Explained

A plain-English guide to MRI, X-ray and CT of the spine.

For information only — not medical advice. The content on this page is patient education to help you understand a condition or treatment. It is not a substitute for personalised assessment by a qualified clinician. Always consult your doctor or specialist about your own symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment decisions.

Why MRI matters

MRI is the most informative scan for spinal nerves, discs and the spinal cord and is almost always required before surgery is considered.

It uses a strong magnetic field rather than radiation, so there is no radiation exposure.

X-ray and CT

X-rays show alignment and instability. Standing X-rays are particularly important in deformity and spondylolisthesis.

CT scans show bone in detail and are used in selected cases, particularly for planning fusion surgery.

How to share imaging securely

Mr Madi's secretary will arrange secure transfer of imaging from any UK or international hospital.

If you have a disc, please bring it to your appointment.
