Overview
Revision Lumbar Fusion is performed when a previous spinal procedure has not given the expected result, or when new symptoms have developed after earlier surgery.
Revision surgery is technically demanding and is planned in detail using new imaging, a careful review of the previous operation notes and a multidisciplinary discussion.
Who it is for
- Persistent or recurrent symptoms after previous surgery
- Adjacent-segment problems
- Implant-related issues
- Non-union of a previous fusion
How it works
- Detailed pre-operative planning including new imaging
- Surgery under general anaesthetic, often with intraoperative neuromonitoring
- Approach selected to avoid previous scar tissue where possible
- Decompression, removal or revision of implants and fusion as needed
Benefits
- Addresses the cause of persistent symptoms
- Stabilises adjacent segments where required
- Restores alignment in deformity cases
Risks & considerations
- Higher complication rate than primary surgery
- Bleeding, infection, dural tear, nerve injury
- Longer recovery
Alternative treatments
- Continued non-operative care
- Pain management programme
- Injection therapy
Recovery & Outlook
Recovery is generally longer than primary surgery and is supported by a structured rehabilitation programme.
